Abstract:″Anti-smuggling″, as a means of projecting official reaches widely and concentrating superior resources in China, plays a key role in shaping the modern country in practicing. Recently, China′s War on Smuggling: Law, Economic Life and the Making of the Modern State, 1842-1965 has been published. Taking the perspective of the interaction between the State and the Society, the book not only examines the anti-smuggling measures of the central government in modern China, but also concerns on the struggle strategies of individuals to smuggle secretly in the shadows. However, under the interactive mode of ″state -society″, the relationship between the anti-smuggling and the modern state construction needs further reflection. In particular, it is necessary to analyze the ″third area″ in which both the state and the society are involved, and to explore the anti-smuggling situations and pressure faced by central and local governments at different levels. Furthermore, the concepts and theories of ″modern state″ and ″modernization transformation″ also need deeper interpretation in the historical context of overall transformation of Chinese society so as to study the cohesive relationship between the theory of ″modern state″ and modern Chinese history, as well as their internal logic.
